"He's right to be unhappy," says Red Bull boss after rear wing failure costs Max Verstappen podium finish.

The Dutchman, who had earlier enjoyed the best seat in the house, in terms of the Lewis Hamilton/George Russell battle raging behind him, was running third, behind the seven-time world champion, when he went off at Stowe.

The cause of his crash was the failure of his rear wing, as was the case seven days earlier in Austria where he crashed out of qualifying. Ironically, in both instances, Russell was to benefit.

"I was lucky in Austria, I was lucky here," said an angry Verstappen in the aftermath of the crash. "That's why you get really fed up with it.

"Different fault but same outcome," he added. "While turning in, the rear wing is not fully attaching and you lose a lot of downforce and just spin off."

"He's right not to be happy," said team boss Laurent Mekies. "It is very unpleasant for drivers to be let down by their car in high-speed corners in two consecutive races, albeit for two different reasons.

"And it is in a much lower scale, also extremely unpleasant for us as a group to send our drivers into the gravel trap," he added. "So, he's right to be unhappy.

"I have no doubt that as a team that will put in place what is necessary for that not to happen again, even if we failed to do that today and we take that as seriously as one can do."

Though not confirmed, it is believed that a delay in returning from the Straight Line Mode caused his off in Austria, but it is understood that the Silverstone off was due to a different type of failure.

"We understand what happened at the Red Bull Ring," said Mekies. "I'm not going to go into the details because I don't think it would be right, but we understand the failure.

"And from the early analysis of today, we have suffered a different type of failure," he continued. "It doesn't make it better," he admitted. "It is clear that in the succession of events, whether or not the failure is different doesn't really matter.

"We are going to review the full area to make sure we leave zero chance for it to happen again. We have raced quite a few races with that concept now. It's too early in the analysis to establish whether it's an issue with the concept or something else. But we are going, for sure, to leave no stone unturned when it comes to it and we have all the options open."

"I would be a very zen person to be optimistic at the moment with what happened again this weekend," said Verstappen. "I'm sorry, but it's just like that.

"I need a few days, I think, to reset and try again," added the Dutchman who is the subject of increasing speculation over his future with the Austrian team, as he is linked with both Mercedes and McLaren.

"Everyone is trying their best," he acknowledged. "I'm not blaming one person or whatever. It's just painful for everyone, you know, that this has happened.

"I want to just finish races, first of all. That would be nice. At the moment, too many things go wrong. It's as simple as that. I'm not even speaking about pace."

The controversial wing is the Austrian team's version of Ferrari's rotating, or Macarena wing, of which McLaren has developed its own version but has yet to race.

Asked if Red Bull will continue with the wing, Mekies said the team would leave "all options open".
